The real cost items of a Shopify store in Quebec, what makes the price vary and how to compare two quotes.

Combien coûte une boutique Shopify au Québec en 2026 ?

Short answer. With an agency, expect $4,000 to $8,000 for a starter Shopify store (up to 100 products) and $8,000 to $25,000 for a custom store. Add the Shopify subscription, a few apps and, if needed, photography and content. These are the ranges we use at Delpacto, in Canadian dollars, plus taxes.

"How much does it cost?" is the first question from almost every entrepreneur who contacts us, and the answer is rarely given clearly. Here are the real cost items of a Shopify store in Quebec, what makes the bill vary and how to compare two quotes without being caught off guard.

Prices at a glance

Option Budget Who it's for Typical timeline
Do it yourself with a theme Shopify subscription + theme + your time. A paid theme costs roughly US$100 to US$500, according to Click Forest. Small catalog, tight budget, time to spare Varies
Starter store with an agency $4,000 to $8,000 Up to 100 products, a design in your brand's colors 4 to 6 weeks
Custom store $8,000 to $25,000 Large catalog, unique design, custom integrations and features 6 to 12 weeks

The amounts in the last two rows are ours (see the Shopify Stores page). Other agencies publish different ranges: that's precisely why you need to compare what's included, not just the total.

The six cost items of a Shopify store

  1. The Shopify subscription. It's monthly and depends on the plan you choose (Basic, Grow or Advanced for the vast majority of stores). Hosting, security and platform updates are included. Shopify's official pricing grid is the reference, since prices change.
  2. The theme. Free or paid (one-time purchase). A well-chosen paid theme saves time, but it doesn't replace real design work.
  3. Design and development. This is the biggest item: layout, adaptation to your brand, key pages, payment, tax and shipping settings, French and English versions.
  4. Content. Product photos, product pages, page copy. It's often the item people forget, and it weighs heavily on sales and on SEO.
  5. Apps. Customer reviews, emails, subscriptions, loyalty programs. There is no reliable average: the bill depends entirely on your needs, and an unnecessary app costs you every month.
  6. Payment fees. Every order incurs transaction fees charged by the payment provider. They aren't added to the cost of building the store, but they come out of your margin.

What pushes the price up (or down)

  • The number of products and variants. A hundred simple products aren't handled like a thousand SKUs with sizes and colors.
  • Migrating your old site. Products, customers, orders and, above all, the 301 redirects that protect your search rankings. It's optional in our starter plan and included in the custom plan.
  • Custom features. A configurator, tiered pricing, a connection to your inventory or billing system: each integration adds development work.
  • Languages. In Quebec, a site available in French is practically unavoidable and governed by the Charter of the French Language. An English version comes on top, with translated and proofread copy.
  • Compliance. Law 25 on the protection of personal information affects cookie consent, the privacy policy and forms.
  • The level of design. Adapting a theme is one thing; designing a unique mockup is another.

Costs after launch

A store isn't a project you deliver and forget. Plan for:

  • the Shopify subscription and your apps, every month;
  • the domain name, every year;
  • ongoing optimization: speed, testing, new pages, adjustments based on sales data;
  • a budget to attract visitors: SEO, advertising, newsletter. This is often the item that decides whether the store pays off or not, far more than the cost of building it.

Agency, freelancer or doing it yourself?

Yourself Freelancer Agency
Upfront cost Lowest Mid-range Highest
Your time A lot Moderate Little: one point of contact and clear steps
Skills combined Yours One person, often a single discipline Design, development, branding, SEO
Main risk SEO, speed or compliance mistakes discovered too late Dependence on a single person Paying for services you don't need
Suits you if… You're testing an idea Your need is specific and limited You're building a brand and aiming for growth

How to compare two quotes

Two quotes at the same price can promise very different things. Ask each provider these questions:

  • How many products, pages and languages are actually included?
  • Are the migration of the old site and the 301 redirects included?
  • Is basic SEO included (tags, heading structure, sitemap, structured data)?
  • How fast will the store be, and how is that measured?
  • Is the store Law 25 compliant at delivery?
  • Who owns the Shopify account, the theme and the code? The answer should be: you.
  • Is there training, and how long does post-launch support last?
  • What is not included, and how much would it cost to add?

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify cheaper than a custom-built site?

Almost always for getting started: hosting, security, the cart and payments are already provided. You mostly pay for design, content and configuration. A fully custom site also requires building and maintaining that whole foundation.

Do the prices include taxes?

No. Our prices are in Canadian dollars, plus taxes.

How long does it take to launch a store?

4 to 6 weeks for a starter store, 6 to 12 weeks for a custom store, from brief to launch. The biggest delay almost always comes from content (photos and copy) that arrives late.

Can I start small and grow later?

Yes, and that's what we recommend to many brands. Shopify lets you add products, languages, apps and features as you grow, without rebuilding everything.

What if I already have a website?

We can migrate it to Shopify (products, customers, orders) and set up redirects so you don't lose your search rankings. It's optional in the starter plan and included in the custom plan.
